The short version
Your health data stays on your phone. We never sell your data and never use it for advertising. The one thing that leaves your device is a short training summary sent to our AI provider when you talk to the coach — miles, paces and plan details, never your raw heart rate, sleep or location. Everything below is the long version.
1. Who We Are
Plan Your Run ("we", "us", "our") builds running training plans and coaching tools, available at planyourrun.org and as an iOS app. This policy covers both. They store data differently, so each is described separately below.
2. The iOS App: Where Your Data Lives
The iOS app has no account and no login. Your training data — runs, plans, routes, check-ins and coach conversations — is stored on your device, and if you have iCloud enabled, in your own private iCloud storage.
That storage is yours, not ours. It counts against your iCloud quota, it syncs between your own devices, and we have no ability to read it. We do not operate a database of iOS users' training data.
3. Apple Health
If you grant permission, the app reads the following from Apple Health:
- Running workouts — distance, duration, date, heart rate
- Resting heart rate, heart rate variability and respiratory rate
- Sleep
- VO₂ max
- Walking and running distance
- Date of birth
These are used to log your runs, estimate training paces, and work out how well you're recovering. Nothing else.
Health data read from Apple Health is never sold, never used for advertising or marketing, never used to build a profile of you, and never disclosed to a third party for their own purposes. It is not shared with data brokers. We only read from Apple Health; we never write to it.
You can withdraw access at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security → Health → Plan Your Run. The app keeps working with whatever it still has.
4. Location
The app uses your location while you're using it, for two things: fetching local weather so it can adjust pace targets for heat and humidity, and centring the map when you draw a route.
Weather requests go to Apple's WeatherKit and route snapping goes to Apple Maps; both are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy terms. Your coordinates are not sent to our servers and are not stored by us. If you search for races, the zip code you enter is sent to our race lookup — that's a zip code you typed, not a device location.
5. The AI Coach
When you send a message to the coach, that message and a short summary of your training are sent through our server to Anthropic, which runs the language model that writes the reply. Anthropic processes it on our behalf in order to generate that reply.
What is sent: your message, recent messages in the conversation, your first name, your age as a number, your experience level, recent run distances and dates, weekly mileage, training paces, your plan and goal race, and a readiness score.
What is not sent: your date of birth, your heart rate, your heart rate variability, your respiratory rate, your sleep hours, your location, your routes, or your email address. Recovery is sent as a single score, not as the measurements behind it.
Conversations are stored on your device and in your own iCloud. We do not keep a copy. You can delete the entire conversation, and everything the coach has worked out about you, from the menu in the Coach tab.
6. The Website
On the web you may use Plan Your Run as a guest, or sign in with Google. Google sign-in is used only to authenticate you; we receive your name, email address and profile picture. We do not access Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts or any other Google service. Our use of data from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Training plans you create on the web are stored in our Salesforce backend, linked to your email address. This is separate from the iOS app, which stores nothing on our servers.
7. Service Providers
We use a small number of third parties to run the service. They process data only to perform their function for us:
- Netlify — hosting and server functions
- Anthropic — the language model behind the coach
- Salesforce — storage for web accounts and plans
- Google — sign-in on the web
- Apple — iCloud storage, weather and maps for the iOS app
- RunSignup — race listings
- Impact.com — the gear catalogue
- Geoapify — route building on the website
We do not sell your personal data, rent it, or share it with anyone for their own marketing or advertising.
8. Affiliate Links
We earn a commission when you buy gear through links in the app or on the site, and this is disclosed wherever products appear. Following such a link takes you to the retailer's own site, where their privacy policy applies. We don't share your health or training data with retailers — a click identifies the referral, not you.
9. Analytics and Cookies
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking. The website uses local storage to remember your session and preferences. The iOS app contains no analytics or advertising SDKs.
10. Retention and Deletion
iOS: your data is on your device and in your iCloud, so you control it directly. Deleting the app removes the local copy; deleting Plan Your Run's data in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage removes the synced copy.
Web: we keep your data for as long as you use the service. Email us and we will delete your account and its data.
Coach conversations can be deleted at any time from within the app, which also clears what the coach remembers about you.
11. Children's Privacy
Plan Your Run is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email us and we will delete it.
12. Your Rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of the personal data we hold about you, and to object to how we use it. Connecticut residents have these rights under the Connecticut Data Privacy Act, and residents of other states and countries may have similar rights under their own laws. We honour these requests regardless of where you live.
For iOS data, you already hold it — no request is necessary. For anything else, email us and we'll act within 45 days.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. If a change materially affects how we handle your data, we'll make that clear in the app or on the site rather than relying on you to notice.
